Managing agricultural waste remains a challenge

Last week, on November 29, we participated in a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development regarding the problem of managing waste from agricultural production. The meeting included representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Culture and Environment, as well as representatives of the Food Economy Federation, KRIR, and the Polish Plant Protection Association.

As far as legislation is concerned, the discussed issue seems to be regulated: the farmer produces the waste, and so the farmer has to dispose of the waste. Reality stands in the way of expectations. Used fertilizer packaging, silage foils and many other agricultural waste products remain in significant quantities on farms. They are often disposed of in a way that poses a health and environmental hazard. Recruitments for the removal of agricultural foils and other such waste, announced every two years by the NFOŚiGW (National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management), are unfortunately not a sufficient solution to the problem.

Representatives of both ministries expressed an interest in the issue, and professed readiness to action our joint environmental recommendations. We hope that the months of efforts contributed to the project will lead to the creation of an effective waste management system, with the participation of both ministries.

Watch this space for updates as the project continues.
